ATHENS: small byzantine churches and monasteries
If you are interested in byzantine art, you must keep in mind that Athens was NOT an important byzantine city.
Istanbul is the place to go to for Constantinople's byzantine art, and in helladic soil, only Mystras mediaeval city at the Peloponnese, and Thessaloniki at the north would be more interesting. But still, in Athens there are lots of tiny, nice byzantine churches. A nice site to visit off city limits, is Daphni (pronounced Daph`nee, NOT `Daphnee the métro station, carrrrreful!!!). Also, Caesariani Monastery offers a nice diversion off the city centre.
