GIFTS from Greece for your friends

A humble komboloi is a very greek thing to get. It can be cheap, or it may be more expensive. The real thing is found at this kombologadiko shop.
Another 'greek' thing is the blue eye (apparently against evil). Doesn't matter if you do not believe in such things, do get one.

Most of the quasi-ancient replicas seen at the Plaka 'Flea Market' in Athens, are industrial. Here are lots of bad and good things, all tossed together... For guaranteed quality gifts I trust the Athens National Archaeological Museum shop (for replicas of ancient jewels, coins etc.) and Benaki Museum shop in Athens (with excellent artefacts of folklorish style, ancient, byzantine etc.).

MORE FOLK ART
Handmade traditional embroideries are quite expensive.
Traditional greek pottery is lovely. Sifnos is the island to get the best original pottery from.
NOTE: TRADITIONAL POTTERY does NOT DEPICT ANCIENT THEMES.
The tradition goes on, with contemporary ceramicists as Eleni Vernadaki.

If you intend to spend lots of money, try these two shops (both at Panepistimiou str): Lalaounis and Zolotas jewellers, who designed excellent pieces inspired by greek art. Their firms continue production. Our best jewel artist was Maroulina (1908-1997).
