YΦXΨΩ were the letters added by the ancient greeks to the early northsemitic (phoenician) alphabet.

SHAPE: A few different versions in ancient cities of the Western-Eastern greek alphabet groups. Two more frequent ancient shapes:
SOUNDS and LETTERINGS of [ks, x , ps]
Eastern group of cities used: Ψ for [ps] and X for [kh]. (See Psi Ψ page). This is today's greek alphabet use.
Western group of cities used X for [ks] ΦΣ for [ps] and Ψ for [kh]. This is X in today's latin alphabet use.
The X shape may be a transformation of theta: Ancient Theta (rotation of the cross), or Tau T (which initially had a cross like form) or of Kappa K.

SOUND: The X symbol was used by the eastern group of ancient greek cities for the sound [kh] exactly like Θ [θ] started its life as [th]. The greeks loved this [h] sound after /p/ /t/ and /k/.
The swap from [kh] to [x] sound happened after hellenistic times.
The palatal variation [ç] occurs before /i/ or /e/ sounds.
